Due to the sharp decline in groundwater levels, the soil density in several parts of Chennai has weakened, compromising the structural stability of many buildings. A joint survey by the Public Works Department and Chennai Corporation found that nearly one lakh buildings are at potential risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of these affected structures are located in older residential zones and low-rise localities. The government has planned to inspect all vulnerable buildings, with demolition or renovation measures to be taken where safety risks are high.
