சென்னையில் கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளில் நிலத்தடி நீர் அளவு கடுமையாக குறைந்துள்ளது. இதனால் மண்ணின் திணிவு குறைந்து, பல கட்டிடங்களின் அடித்தளங்கள் தளர்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளன. சுமார் ஒரு லட்சம் கட்டிடங்கள் ஆபத்தான நிலையில் இருப்பதாக பொது பணித்துறை மற்றும் நகராட்சிகள் இணைந்து வெளியிட்ட ஆய்வு தெரிவிக்கிறது.
சேதமடைந்த கட்டிடங்களில் பெரும்பாலானவை பழைய குடியிருப்பு பகுதிகளிலும் குறைந்த உயரமுள்ள கட்டிடங்களிலும் காணப்படுகின்றன. அரசு இக்கட்டிடங்களை கண்காணித்து, ஆபத்தானவை என அடையாளம் காணப்பட்டவற்றை இடிக்கவோ, புதுப்பிக்கவோ நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கவுள்ளது.
Due to the sharp decline in groundwater levels, the soil density in several parts of Chennai has weakened, compromising the structural stability of many buildings. A joint survey by the Public Works Department and Chennai Corporation found that nearly one lakh buildings are at potential risk.
Most of these affected structures are located in older residential zones and low-rise localities. The government has planned to inspect all vulnerable buildings, with demolition or renovation measures to be taken where safety risks are high. Officials have urged residents to cooperate for their own safety.
